Donkey Floaties? Rowboat? ARK?????

When the pictures would have been best, it was raining too hard to risk the camera outside AND I was busy digging trenches to drain water out of pens, and moving shivering wet minis as out-of-the-wind as I could get them... now I am wishing I had tried to get some pictures. Had 4 minis spend the night in the trailer last night, and they got hold of some of my stuff and trompled it in the wet mushy poop {sigh}. Had 5 minis (the 2 mamas, 2 babies and the VERY pregnant jennet) spend the night in Randy's container where he parks his 4-wheeler, to get them out of the weather. They were not real happy locked in a dark box but at least they were warm and dry (and thank God Mary Ellen did NOT have her foal in this storm)! The 4-wheeler spent the night under the carpor where my Jeep usually is, because the Jeep was down the street at my friend Mary's, who brought me the rest of the way home (through the wash running over the road) in her 4x4 pickup. Hilary's car spnt hte night at the boyfriend's, he brought HER home in his Bronco... it was pretty wet around here! No wash on my property like Mikey has but it was bad enough even so...

And wow my legs ache, big rubber boots and a lot of walking in thick deep mud used some muscles I don't usually use that hard! But this morning it looks a lot better and some happy donkeys were sprung from the trailer and container :)

Where's My Ark???

We live in a pretty large, fairly flat valley, and from our house you can see mountains in pretty much every direction - closest to the south, not too far to the north, a bit farther to the west and off in the distance to the east...

Except for today! Tonight on the way home, all I saw was gray... not a single mountain in sight! It's been raining since before I got home, hard and steady, boy was it fun to feed in this {not}. We even lost our electricity at one point this evening! I'm not REALLY complaining, we NEED the rain... just truthful comments and descriptions {wink}. I do worry about my critters when it's like this, even though they have covers, with this much falling from the sky, we end up with sheets of water over the land and that means no dry spots, not even under the covers... and even under our porches, so the dogs are ALL in the laundry room (and it's barely big enough).

Just thought I would share what happened when Luna decided to leap out of that trailer Sunday and I was in the way...

It's not nearly as swollen as it was on Sunday, but the bruise is really starting to show... the first shot is from this morning...

and again, from tonight. About 10 hours later and quite a bit darker already!

The scrape, luckily, is not bothering me much. Losing skin is generally a fairly serious problem for me, residuals from some medication I was on years ago. So I expect, even though it's only a bit of skin missing, that I will end up with a scar... but only time will tell. I thought due to the initial swelling there might be a bone crack or chip but there isn't enough pain for that {whew} and no stitches so of course Mikey still has me beat!!!

As for Miss Luna, Savannah is working her hard, be sure to stop by the blog entitled Miss Savannah's School of Manners and see the lessons Luna is learning. I think she's a pretty good student... and of course Savannah is a great teacher!

Luna Goes to School

Yesterday was Luna's first day with Savannah (you might remember "Spice goes to Boot Camp" that I posted about a few weeks ago). Savannah has changed the name of her blog so be sure to watch my girl's progress, you can find her near the top of my blog list, the new name of the blog is:

Miss Savannah's School of Manners

Yup, Ride, Ride, Ride!!!

Friday night was my first class with Katie. After 8 years of riding my gaited horse, I figured it's about time I learned how... it was different than I expected but I can see that we are both going to learn a lot. And we were both pretty tired after that! Didn't get home to bed until about 1am and back up at 5:30 to be ready for Tammy and Savannah to pick me up for a ride out at Courthouse Rock.
A Katie earcam as we head towards Courthouse Rock in the morning

Our group - can you find me?

Here I am :)

Just an example of the petroglyphs we saw at the lunch stop

Love this shot of the sun going down behind Courthouse Rock as we returned to the trailers

Then today we went over to the Anthem Trail and rode over to Pioneer Village for lunch. Luna came to the trailhead in Tammy's trailer and they have a rear tack so she had to back out, which she is not used to, when she was little she fell getting out of the trailer and since then she is pretty hesitant, and she likes to come out head first and see where she is going. Tried and tried to get her to back out and she was smashing me against the manger so they swung out the saddle rack and folded the wall out of the way so she could turn aruond, once she saw the outside she pretty much bolted out of the trailer and I was right in her way. So I can say now that my mare has an odd talent - most horses step on your toes and you kind of expect that... well Luna has now stepped on my HAND (remember last July?) and now, she has stepped on my leg - about 4 inches ABOVE the ankle! Took the skin off THROUGH MY PANTS AND SOCK! Once on the trail, Luna was a handful so we both worked pretty hard but we got through it and all's well that ends well... she had a good lesson on walking where GRANDMA tells her to, and I didn't get upset or angry or scared, so I'm proud of handling her. She's grown again and she's such a big girl, sometimes I wonder what the heck I am doing at my age riding this mare... but she's my girl and she's stuck with me!!!

My "New" Old Job... And Other Updates

Well we are into the second week after the change in the law firm I work for. So far I'm doing pretty good. I'm a lot busier than I ever was before, I'm used to finishing my work pretty much every day but that doesn't happen any more. Of course I have LOTS of leftovers from the old job to take care of, on top of learning the new stuff from the new job, AND doing all my normal work. Feels like 3 jobs in one right now. Which is just a comment, NOT a complaint - oh no, I am QUITE thankful to still have a job! When we first learned of the breakup of the old firm I thought I'd be unemployed come the new year. So no complaining here! And actually once we get things figured out, some of the stuff that the new firm has will save me a bunch of time, so it's all good!

As for Randy, the VA continues dragging their heels. We thought we'd have an answer after the Voc Rehab appointment last week, but instead they sent him home with a couple of "projects" to complete and come back again this week... I really don't care any more WHAT they decide, either option would at least get us going in a new direction. I just wish they would DECIDE!!!! This waiting is so hard on both of us.

PS my new donkey has figured out the food thing - the golf cart is no longer scary as it bring the food, and if somone won't share a feeder with her, she knows where there is another that will ALSO have food in it! Haven't decided on a name yet though...

And the puppies can't be ready to go soon enough for me. I'd like my kitchen back (even if Randy is the main cook). I'm in the habit of giving my pups "baby names" - I've got to call them something while they are here, and I don't know what their new owners will decide until we actually meet them - and so far none of the pups are spoken for yet.

Hilary has dubbed this one "Mr. Lucky" since he is the only survivor of Darci's litter, but me, I call him fuzzbutt or fuzzy wuzzy ;)

The smallest one but he has more hair than the other three combined!

Angel and AJ

Ditto's got an itch...

No pictures of it but this pup thinks he is a coyote or maybe a hound dog - when he wants his mama, he tips his little nose up in the air and HOWLS like you wouldn't believe!

Angel sleeping so sweet...

...until the flash went off. Hey! That was bright!!!

The three blondies playing

YUM YUM!

Stinkin' cute though aren't they?

Bye Bye Grandcritters!

Well Lindsey is back from her travels and today she took all 7 of her "children" home. They were pretty good for me but I must admit it is nice to be back to "just" my own to take care of!

And, HAPPY BIRTHDAY ZACCHAEUS! I can't believe you are five already!

Ride, Ride, Ride!

I don't make resolutions but one of my goals for this year is to ride MORE! Yeah I ride a lot already but I WANT MORE! I'm doing pretty good so far, rode on January 1, 3, 9 and 10... and next weekend I have plans to ride Friday night, all day Saturday and all day Monday! There is another ride Sunday I'd like to make as well but we've got more fence to do darn it...

This weekend I went to Box Canyon in Wickenburg with 3 good friends. We started with breakfast at Cowboy Cafe and ended with lunch at Anita's. The fantastic ride in between and great company made the perfect day! Today it was the "anti-freeze" ride up in Prescott. I've never ridden in snow and I guess I can still say th at, there was a bit here and there but nothing solid. However there was ice on the trail which was a bit hairy for us, and the first water stop the horses had to break the ice before they could drink. Katie wasn't sure water that cold was a good idea but later on in the day she couldn't get enough!

Granite Mountain:

And here's a sight you don't see every day:

Yup that's prickly pear growing in snow!

Thanks to my pal Melanie I had my own flask of "anti-freeze" and between that and my thermal suit, I was comfy all day! Sherman got to come too and wore his own "thermal suit" so if someone will finally post a picture, I know some were taken, I will copy it and add it here :)
